US Launches Major Bombing Campaign on Iranian Island Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States military conducted a significant bombing raid on Kharg Island, a strategic Iranian location. The operation, directed by Trump and executed by Central Command, targeted and reportedly obliterated all military objectives on the island, which the president described as Iran’s "crown jewel." This aggressive action comes in response to Iran's newly appointed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, vowing to keep the vital Strait of Hormuz blocked, a move that has already seen Brent crude oil futures surge past $100 a barrel.
Trump stated that the U.S. intentionally spared the island's oil infrastructure but issued a stern warning against any interference with free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait is a critical maritime artery, facilitating approximately 20% of the world's petroleum liquids and liquefied natural gas trade. Since the conflict began, more than a dozen ships have reportedly been attacked in the Persian Gulf, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claiming responsibility for several ambushes and declaring its intent to target any vessel attempting to traverse the strait.
Experts warn that Iran's strategy of asymmetric naval warfare, utilizing fast-attack boats, drones, shore-based missiles, and a vast arsenal of naval mines, poses a multi-dimensional threat capable of sowing chaos in the Gulf. While Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth indicated no clear evidence of new mines in the Strait, the historical precedent of the 1980s "Tanker War" highlights the potential for severe disruption. The U.S. action aims to counter Iran's efforts to use the Strait as a "lever" to pressure adversaries, ensuring global oil supply and shipping remain unhindered.
