Crypto PAC Unleashes Millions in Illinois Races, Accusing Consumer Advocates of Corruption
The cryptocurrency industry is deploying significant financial resources in Illinois congressional primaries, targeting candidates who have supported consumer protection legislation for digital assets. Fairshake PAC, a political action committee, has reportedly spent at least $3.3 million on negative advertising campaigns in the state's 2nd and 7th Congressional Districts. These efforts aim to discredit candidates by accusing them of corruption, a strategy that critics argue cynically co-opts genuine anti-corruption sentiments.
The PAC's attacks are primarily directed at Democratic candidates, including state Senator Robert Peters and state Representative La Shawn K. Ford, both of whom voted for a state law requiring crypto companies to register and adhere to local regulations. This legislation, signed by Governor JB Pritzker, represents a move towards state-level oversight that the crypto industry generally opposes, preferring a more lenient federal framework. The spending by Fairshake PAC is seen as a retaliatory measure against these lawmakers for their support of consumer safeguards.
In the case of Robert Peters, mailers have labeled him a "corporate pawn" and accused him of being "bankrolled by special interests," despite his endorsements from progressive figures like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. La Shawn K. Ford has faced attack ads that highlight a past bank fraud indictment, though the ads reportedly omit that the charges were largely dropped and Ford ultimately pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor tax offense. Ford's campaign has responded by sending a cease-and-desist letter to Fairshake PAC, calling the advertisements slanderous and misleading.
