Merrillville Man Faces Murder Charges Following Fatal Attack on Parents
A 44-year-old Indiana man is in custody without bond after allegedly murdering his father and severely wounding his mother during a violent domestic dispute early Sunday morning. Merrillville police responded to a 911 call at approximately 2 a.m. to find Jason Whitaker covered in blood and wielding a knife. Inside the home, officers discovered the body of 74-year-old Orell Whitaker, while the suspect's mother suffered critical injuries, including multiple stab wounds and a fractured skull caused by a cast-iron skillet. The mother was transported to an Illinois hospital for emergency surgery to address her severe head trauma.
The conflict reportedly began when the mother confronted her son about repeatedly turning off the home’s furnace. Following the attack, Whitaker offered investigators unsubstantiated claims that his parents were involved in drug use and human trafficking, though police found no evidence to support these allegations. Instead, authorities recovered a journal filled with incoherent writing and multiple blood-stained knives at the scene. Whitaker now faces a series of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery. The incident highlights the tragic outcome of a volatile living situation that had already seen the parents attempt to evict their son before allowing him to return.
