Alabama Prison Whistleblowers Transferred to Solitary Following Documentary Exposure

Three incarcerated activists featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary *The Alabama Solution* were abruptly moved to an isolated unit at the Kilby Correctional Facility in mid-January. Raoul Poole, Robert Earl Council, and Melvin Ray are currently being held in a five-cell unit without an official explanation from the Alabama Department of Corrections. Legal representatives for the men express grave concern for their safety, noting that the transfer follows a nonviolent work strike organized by the activists in December.

The documentary, which premiered in 2025, utilizes smuggled footage to expose severe overcrowding, rampant drug use, and systemic violence within Alabama’s prison system. Poole, Council, and Ray have long been targets of state retaliation due to their leadership in the Free Alabama Movement, an organization focused on ending forced labor and improving dangerous living conditions. Council previously suffered a severe beating by correctional officers in 2021 that resulted in permanent physical injuries. By isolating these individuals, the Alabama Department of Corrections continues a pattern of silencing those who document the internal realities of state institutions that remain largely inaccessible to the public and the press.
