Florida Motorist Taken Into Custody After Navigating Highway in Reverse

Flagler County deputies arrested 47-year-old William Murphy III on March 13 after multiple motorists reported a silver sedan traveling backward in the eastbound lanes of a local highway. Law enforcement officers eventually located the vehicle in a nearby Panda Express parking lot, where they observed Murphy shifting the car from reverse into drive. When questioned by authorities, Murphy claimed he was attempting to reach an auto parts store because his vehicle suffered from mechanical failures that prevented forward motion.

Despite the dangerous nature of the maneuver, bodycam footage shows Murphy insisting that his actions were not problematic, noting that he maintained a steady path without swerving. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office noted that the alleged mechanical issues appeared to resolve themselves once deputies arrived on the scene. A subsequent investigation revealed that Murphy was operating the vehicle with a suspended license, a violation for which he holds ten prior convictions. He was booked into custody and later released after posting a $1,000 bond. This incident highlights the ongoing risks posed by unlicensed drivers and the unpredictable nature of traffic violations on high-speed roadways.
