Pentagon Confirms Expansion of Military Operations Against Latin American Cartels

The United States military is broadening its offensive against transnational criminal organizations in the Western Hemisphere, with officials signaling that recent strikes are only the beginning of a larger campaign. Joseph Humire, the acting assistant secretary of war for homeland defense and Americas security affairs, confirmed to the House Armed Services Committee that the U.S. is actively supporting Ecuador in a new initiative dubbed "Operation Total Extermination." This military effort involves direct kinetic actions against targets along the Colombia-Ecuador border, representing a significant escalation in the regional drug war.

The campaign has already faced complications, including a March 3 incident where a 500-pound bomb landed in Colombian territory, sparking concerns over the precision and scope of these operations. This new land-based offensive builds upon "Operation Southern Spear," an ongoing series of strikes against vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific that has resulted in nearly 160 civilian deaths since September 2025. While the administration classifies these targets as narco-terrorists, it has declined to publicly identify the specific groups involved.

Legal experts warn that the administration’s approach bypasses established constitutional and international protocols regarding the use of force. As the Pentagon moves to implement what officials describe as systemic friction across criminal networks, critics argue that the lack of transparency and legislative oversight creates a dangerous precedent. The White House maintains that these actions are necessary to combat regional instability, even as the military prepares for a wider, more intensive counter-cartel strategy.
