Netherlands Scrambles to Secure $1.1 Billion Patriot Missile System Amid Global Supply Crunch

The Dutch government is moving to finalize a $1.1 billion order for an additional Patriot air-defense system to avoid being pushed to the end of a lengthy international waiting list. Defense Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius confirmed that the current price proposal from manufacturer Raytheon expires on March 31. Failing to sign the contract by this deadline would likely force the Netherlands to wait until 2033 for delivery while facing significant cost increases. The surge in global demand for advanced air defense, driven largely by ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, has made securing production slots increasingly difficult for NATO allies.

This procurement is part of a broader effort to bolster national defense capabilities and meet NATO’s integrated air and missile defense requirements. Because of the urgent deadline, the government intends to proceed with the purchase without waiting for formal parliamentary approval of a supplementary budget. In addition to the Patriot system, the Netherlands plans to spend €570 million on more Boxer RCT-30 infantry fighting vehicles. Securing these assets quickly is viewed as essential for strengthening the Dutch Medium Infantry Brigade and maintaining operational readiness in a volatile security environment.
