San Francisco Judge Grants Probation to Driver Responsible for Fatal Bus Stop Collision

An 80-year-old woman, Mary Lau, has been sentenced to two years of probation following a 2024 vehicle crash that claimed the lives of a family of four in San Francisco. Lau pleaded no contest to four felony counts of vehicular manslaughter after driving her vehicle into a bus shelter at speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour. The collision resulted in the deaths of 40-year-old Diego Cardoso de Oliviera, 38-year-old Matilde Moncada Ramos Pinto, and their two young sons. Despite the severity of the incident, the presiding judge cited Lau’s age, lack of a prior criminal record, and expressed remorse as primary factors in the decision to forgo jail time.

The sentencing has sparked significant outrage among the victims' families and the public, as many feel the punishment fails to account for the magnitude of the tragedy. While the court also imposed a three-year driving ban and 200 hours of community service, family members noted that these terms ignored stricter recommendations from the Adult Probation Department. Investigators determined that Lau was not impaired, suffering from a medical emergency, or distracted by a phone at the time of the crash, leaving the exact cause of the high-speed incident unclear. The victims' relatives intend to pursue further accountability through a civil wrongful death lawsuit as they continue to grieve the loss of their loved ones.
