US-Made Gator Mines Found in Iranian Village Following Deadly Overnight Incident

Reports from southern Iran indicate that a lethal incident occurred overnight in the village of Kafari, near Shiraz, involving the deployment of US-manufactured Gator Scatterable Mine systems. Iranian media outlets have confirmed multiple fatalities resulting from the event. Military analysts, including experts from Armament Research Services and Janes, have identified the munitions in photographic evidence as BLU-91/B anti-tank mines. These devices are typically air-delivered via cargo bombs, such as the CBU-89/B or CBU-78/B, which disperse the mines over a wide area.

The Gator system is designed to distribute a mix of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, though current visual evidence from the site has only confirmed the presence of the anti-tank variants. The United States remains the only combatant in the ongoing regional conflict known to possess this specific technology. While the presence of these mines suggests an aerial delivery operation, the US Department of Defense has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the deployment. The use of such scatterable munitions raises significant concerns regarding civilian safety, as the devices are designed to blanket large zones, often complicating efforts to secure areas after an attack.
