Pentagon Bolsters Middle East Presence With Additional Marine Expeditionary Units

The United States military is escalating its regional footprint by deploying thousands of additional Marines and a fleet of warships to the Middle East. This surge comes as the ongoing conflict with Iran enters its fourth week, signaling a significant expansion of American ground, air, and sea assets in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, which includes the USS Boxer, USS Comstock, and USS Portland, departed San Diego ahead of schedule this week to join the growing contingent of forces already stationed in the theater.

This latest movement involves approximately 2,500 Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. They follow the recent deployment of the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group, which is currently transiting the Indian Ocean with roughly 2,200 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and an air wing featuring F-35B fighter jets. These arrivals supplement an existing force of over 40,000 personnel, multiple carrier strike groups, and an extensive array of bombers and fighter aircraft that were moved into position prior to the outbreak of hostilities on February 28. While the Pentagon has declined to formally comment on specific future troop movements, the rapid buildup underscores the strategic importance of maintaining a robust deterrent posture as the regional war intensifies.
