Marine Corps Authorizes Red Dot Optics for Service Pistol Qualifications

The United States Marine Corps has officially updated its marksmanship standards to allow the use of red dot optics during pistol qualification courses. According to a recent Marine Administrative Message, personnel are now permitted to utilize the M17 Romeo red dot sight, which employs LED technology to project an aiming point for increased accuracy. This policy shift marks the first time in the branch's history that optical sights have been authorized for use during standard pistol qualification drills.

While the adoption of these sights is intended to enhance overall lethality and precision, the rollout relies on individual units to procure the equipment. Units that require pistols for operational duties are authorized to use their own funding to purchase the sights, which must then be installed and maintained by qualified unit armorers. Marines are also cleared to utilize these optics in actual combat environments. Although every Marine undergoes rifle training, pistol qualification is generally reserved for those whose specific rank, billet, or security responsibilities necessitate the use of a sidearm. This modernization effort reflects a broader push to integrate advanced sighting technology into the standard combat repertoire of the force.
