UAE Authorities Crack Down on Social Media Users Amid Discrepancies in Official Reports of Iranian Strikes

The United Arab Emirates is aggressively suppressing the dissemination of unauthorized footage following a series of Iranian drone strikes on its territory. While the government maintains a narrative of successful interceptions and minimal damage, open-source investigations and satellite imagery suggest that several high-profile attacks on critical infrastructure were more impactful than official statements admit. In an effort to preserve the nation’s reputation as a secure global hub for tourism and business, officials have criminalized the sharing of unverified media, leading to the arrest of over 100 individuals for allegedly spreading misleading content.

The legal response has been swift, with the UAE attorney general ordering the arrest of 35 people for allegedly glorifying military aggression and harming national defense measures. Authorities have warned that publishing images or videos of the strikes can result in at least two years of imprisonment and significant financial penalties. Despite these warnings, evidence from independent researchers indicates that some drone strikes, including an incident at the strategic Port of Fujairah, occurred without the successful interceptions claimed by state media. The UAE’s Ministry of Defence and various regional media offices have declined to comment on the discrepancies between official accounts and public visual evidence.
