U.S. Military Details High-Stakes Rescue Operation Following F-15E Shootdown Over Iran
U.S. officials have disclosed the complex logistics behind the daring recovery of two Air Force airmen whose F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iranian territory on April 3. The incident, which marks the first loss of a crewed aircraft to enemy fire during the current conflict, triggered a massive search and rescue operation involving hundreds of personnel and a diverse array of aircraft. The weapon systems officer managed to evade capture for 50 hours by hiding in a mountain crevice while injured, eventually being recovered on Easter Sunday alongside the pilot.
The rescue mission required a significant force, including A-10C Thunderbolt II jets, HC-130J Combat King aircraft, and HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters. During the operation, U.S. forces engaged in intense close-quarters combat to suppress enemy fire and secure the extraction zones. The intensity of the mission resulted in the loss of one A-10, whose pilot successfully ejected over friendly territory after sustaining damage during the firefight. Despite facing heavy small-arms fire during the extraction, the recovery teams successfully brought both crew members home, with officials reporting that all involved personnel are expected to recover from their injuries.
