Selective Service Moves Toward Mandatory Automatic Draft Registration by Year-End
The Selective Service System has officially submitted its proposed regulations to the White House, marking a significant step toward transitioning to an automatic military draft registration process. Under the new mandate, which was enacted in December 2025, the agency plans to shift away from voluntary sign-ups by instead aggregating personal data from various federal departments. This initiative aims to identify and register all eligible male citizens and residents by December 2026, effectively removing the need for individuals to register themselves.
While the government frames this as a streamlined administrative update, the project faces substantial logistical hurdles. Critics point out that existing federal databases often lack the specific information required to accurately determine draft eligibility or maintain current mailing addresses. Furthermore, the agency must navigate a complex regulatory review process through the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs before the rules can be finalized. Despite the rapid timeline, the Selective Service has maintained a low profile regarding its operational plans, sparking concerns among those wary of the agency’s expanded authority to requisition data across the federal government. As the December deadline approaches, the move remains a point of contention, highlighting a broader, bipartisan push to modernize military preparedness amidst rising global tensions.
