U.S. Military Initiates Comprehensive Maritime Blockade of Iranian Ports
The United States military has officially commenced a naval blockade targeting all Iranian ports and coastal regions. U.S. Central Command confirmed that the operation began at 10:00 a.m. ET, authorizing forces to intercept, divert, or capture any vessel attempting to enter or depart Iranian territory without permission. While the blockade applies strictly to Iranian-linked maritime traffic, officials noted that neutral vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to non-Iranian destinations will remain unaffected, though they may face increased military oversight and communication checks.
This escalation follows the collapse of peace negotiations intended to resolve the conflict that began on February 28. Although a two-week truce is currently in place, the failure to reach a long-term agreement has prompted a more aggressive posture from the U.S. government. Reports indicate that over 15 American warships are currently deployed to enforce the exclusion zone. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center has issued formal guidance to international shipping, confirming that the restrictions encompass all Iranian energy infrastructure and coastal ports. While neutral ships currently docked in Iran have been granted a brief grace period to exit, the move represents a significant tightening of the economic and military pressure placed on the region.
