ROTC Cadets Credit Fallen Instructor’s Mentorship for Survival During Campus Shooting
Eight Army ROTC cadets at Old Dominion University are speaking publicly for the first time about a harrowing classroom shooting that claimed the life of their senior instructor, Lt. Col. Brandon Shah. The incident occurred when a gunman, identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, entered a Military Science class and opened fire. According to the cadets, Shah immediately lunged at the assailant, engaging in a physical struggle that provided the students with the critical window of time needed to intervene and subdue the attacker. Despite suffering a gunshot wound to the chest during the confrontation, one cadet continued to fight alongside his peers, demonstrating the composure and tactical discipline instilled in them by their fallen leader.
The students emphasize that their ability to react decisively under fire was a direct result of the combat casualty care and leadership training provided by Shah. Following the neutralization of the shooter, the cadets utilized their medical training to treat Shah’s injuries, though he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. In recognition of their valor, several cadets received Meritorious Service Medals, while both Shah and the wounded student were awarded Purple Hearts. For those he mentored, Shah remains a heroic figure whose final actions fulfilled his commitment to protect the students under his command. His legacy is now honored on campus with a memorial reflecting his personal motto: "Be Bold, Be Quick, Be Gone.
