Air Force Prioritizes Mission Systems Over New Tanker Aircraft in Sixth-Generation Shift

The U.S. Air Force has redirected its focus from developing a new sixth-generation tanker aircraft to prioritizing advanced mission systems that enhance resilience and operational capabilities in contested environments. This shift marks a significant reallocation of resources, with $13 million requested for the new Advanced Tanker Systems (ATS) program in fiscal year 2027, replacing the Next Generation Air-refueling System (NGAS) initiative. Maj. Gen. Frank Verdugo, the Air Force deputy assistant secretary for budget, emphasized during a media briefing that ATS aims to provide more flexible and robust solutions for future tanker operations.

The decision reflects a strategic pivot driven by budget constraints and the need to ensure survivability in high-threat environments. While NGAS remains on the table as a long-term option, the service is now concentrating on defining the specific mission systems—such as advanced connectivity, electronic warfare capabilities, and defensive technologies—that will be essential for next-generation refueling missions. This approach allows the Air Force to adapt more quickly to evolving threats while maintaining progress toward its goal of a sixth-generation tanker fleet.

The shift also aligns with ongoing efforts to analyze alternatives for NGAS, which includes exploring various airframe designs, propulsion systems, and even off-board capabilities to protect tankers. Lt. Gen. Rebecca Sonkiss, acting commander of Air Mobility Command, has previously suggested that NGAS could ultimately evolve into a "family of systems" comprising both manned and unmanned aircraft. Meanwhile, the service is proceeding with a contract to purchase 75 additional KC-46A Pegasus tankers, ensuring continued production while plans for future tankers are refined. This interim solution underscores the Air Force's commitment to maintaining operational readiness as it balances long-term modernization goals with immediate needs.
