Saildrone Unveils High-Speed Spectre Drone Fleet for Advanced Submarine Tracking
Maritime defense firm Saildrone has introduced the Spectre, a new class of unmanned surface vessels specifically engineered for anti-submarine warfare. Measuring 54 meters in length and weighing 250 metric tons, the Spectre is capable of reaching speeds up to 30 knots. This platform represents a significant shift for the company, as it offers both winged and non-winged configurations to prioritize stealth and speed over the extreme endurance typically associated with the brand’s traditional wind-powered drones.
The development of the Spectre involves a strategic partnership with Lockheed Martin, which will serve as the mission integrator to provide necessary autonomy for complex underwater surveillance. By offering a more cost-effective alternative to traditional naval assets, the program aims to increase the number of autonomous units capable of operating in contested environments. The design has already received approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping, confirming its compliance with high-speed naval standards.
Self-funded by Saildrone and priced at approximately $40 million per unit, the vessels are scheduled for production at Fincantieri shipyards in Wisconsin. With a manufacturing capacity of five ships annually, the company expects to launch the first round of sea trials in early 2027. This initiative underscores a growing industry focus on integrating quiet, autonomous technology into the front lines of modern naval defense strategies.
