Iran Intensifies Maritime Incidents in Strait of Hormuz Despite Trump’s Ceasefire Extension
The United States announced a ceasefire extension with Iran earlier this week, yet Iranian forces have continued to target ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. According to reports from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), at least two vessels were attacked by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboats on Wednesday. These incidents highlight ongoing tensions despite diplomatic efforts and raise concerns over maritime security in the region.
The first attack occurred near Oman, where an IRGC gunboat fired upon a Liberian-flagged container ship, causing significant damage to its bridge. The crew reported being safe, with no environmental impact noted. A second incident involved a cargo ship that was reportedly fired upon and forced to stop in the water, though no injuries were reported. UKMTO has issued warnings urging vessels to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Iranian officials claim the attacks were justified, stating that the targeted ships ignored warnings from Iranian forces. State-affiliated media outlets have also accused the vessels of endangering maritime security. Meanwhile, Tehran continues to demand an end to the U.S. naval blockade before resuming negotiations. These developments underscore the volatile state of affairs in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global trade and a flashpoint for international tensions.
