U.S. Air Force Aims to Expand F-15EX Eagle Fleet to Over 267 Aircraft

The U.S. Air Force has announced plans to significantly expand its fleet of F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets, increasing the number from the previously planned 129 to 267 aircraft as part of the fiscal 2027 budget request. This move reflects a strategic shift in modernizing and bolstering the service’s air combat capabilities.

The revised plan calls for the procurement of an additional 24 F-15EXs next year, at a cost of approximately $3 billion. The expansion is driven by the need to replace aging F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft while maintaining fighter readiness. According to Air Force officials, the fleet will eventually consist of a mix of 4th, 5th, and next-generation fighters, including F-16s, F-22s, and F-35As. The F-15EX is positioned as a complementary asset to these platforms, particularly due to its superior weapons capacity and role in the Pacific theater.

The F-15EX’s ability to carry up to 12 air-to-air missiles and larger standoff munitions makes it a critical component for long-range strike missions and homeland defense. Unlike stealth-focused fighters like the F-35A, the F-15EX is designed for high-capacity weapons delivery, making it well-suited for contested environments in the Pacific. The service has not yet specified when it expects to reach the 267-aircraft target, but at current procurement rates, this could extend into the mid-2030s.

This decision comes amid recent combat losses of F-15Es during Operation Epic Fury, with four aircraft lost in incidents involving friendly fire and hostile action. These events have underscored the urgency to modernize and expand the fleet. Congress will play a pivotal role in approving this ambitious plan, as it has previously blocked retirements of older F-15E models and supported F-15EX funding.

By doubling its F-15EX fleet, the Air Force aims to ensure a robust and versatile combat capability that aligns with evolving global security challenges. This expansion underscores the service’s commitment to maintaining air superiority while adapting to emerging threats in an increasingly competitive international landscape.
