Kentucky Trial Begins for Man Accused in Murder-For-Hire Plot Involving California Highway Patrol Captain
BURKESVILLE, Ky. — A trial has commenced in Kentucky for Thomas O’Donnell, who is accused of murdering Michael Harding, the estranged husband of Julie Harding, a captain with the California Highway Patrol. The case carries significant weight as prosecutors argue that O’Donnell was hired by Julie Harding to kill her husband, potentially leading to a death sentence if convicted.
The incident unfolded in September 2022 when Michael Harding, an HVAC business owner living in Tennessee, was lured to a vacant home under the pretense of providing services. He was found shot twice in the head and twice in the body, with investigators linking the crime to a phone used by O’Donnell. Prosecutors allege that Julie Harding withdrew over $102,000 from joint accounts before her husband’s death and that notes left at the scene taunted him.
O’Donnell was arrested in December 2022 while traveling to Texas after his sister sought help from CHP, revealing O’Donnell’s connection to Julie Harding. Phone records show extensive communication between the two prior to the murder, with contact ceasing 11 days before the killing. Two days after O’Donnell’s arrest, Julie Harding was found dead at her Tennessee home, believed to have taken her own life.
In his defense, O’Donnell’s attorney has argued that the case hinges on “level of responsibility” and claims there is no definitive proof linking O’Donnell to the shooting. The defense points to an acrimonious divorce between Michael and Julie Harding, suggesting she may have sought help from others in her marital disputes. As the trial progresses, both sides will present evidence to support their narratives, with the jury tasked with determining the truth.
