USMC Tests Autonomous Cargo Helicopters for Future Combat Needs

The U.S. Marine Corps is evaluating two new autonomous cargo helicopters designed to enhance logistics capabilities in high-risk environments. The service has awarded contracts for these platforms as part of its Autonomous Aerial Logistics Program Medium Aerial Resupply Vehicle — Expeditionary Logistics (MARV-EL) initiative. The first platform, the R66 Turbinetruck, integrates Sikorsky’s MATRIX autonomy system into the proven Robinson R66 airframe. The second is the Uncrewed 505, developed from the Bell 505 in a collaboration led by Near Earth Autonomy, with support from Bell Textron, Moog Inc., and XP Services.

The Marine Corps’ focus on autonomous logistics stems from its need to operate effectively in contested environments, particularly as it prepares for potential conflicts in the Pacific region against adversaries like China. These systems aim to provide rapid resupply of critical resources such as ammunition, medical supplies, and equipment directly to Marines on the front lines, regardless of terrain, weather, or enemy threats.

The R66 Turbinetruck leverages the reliability and versatility of the Robinson R66 airframe, a single-turbine engine helicopter known for its performance in civilian markets. Combined with Sikorsky’s MATRIX system, which has already demonstrated success in U.S. Army UH-60M Blackhawks, the platform offers autonomous capabilities tailored for high-risk missions. The Turbinetruck is designed to deliver up to 1,300 pounds of cargo internally or via an external hook, ensuring flexibility and affordability in combat sustainment efforts.

The Uncrewed 505, based on the Bell 505 airframe, represents another innovative approach to autonomous logistics. Developed through a partnership with Near Earth Autonomy, this platform highlights the potential for scalable, reliable solutions in demanding operational environments. Both systems underscore the Marine Corps’ commitment to advancing unmanned technologies that prioritize safety, efficiency, and mission readiness.

As these platforms progress through testing and deployment, they promise to revolutionize how the Marines execute logistics operations in future conflicts, reducing reliance on human crews in hazardous scenarios and enhancing overall combat effectiveness.
