U.S.-led War in Iran Exceeds $25 Billion in Costs

The Pentagon revealed on Wednesday that the U.S.-led military operation in Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury, has already cost American taxpayers approximately $25 billion. Acting Comptroller Jules Hurst III testified before the House Armed Services Committee, stating that the majority of these expenses have been allocated to ordnance and munitions. The figure also includes costs related to operations, maintenance, and equipment replacement.

Hurst emphasized that a supplemental funding request is being formulated by the White House to cover the escalating costs of the conflict. This comes as the war, which began with a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on February 28, continues to escalate. The Pentagon’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2027 had initially been under review but was overshadowed by discussions about the war’s financial and strategic implications.

The operation has resulted in significant casualties: 13 American service members have been killed, while 400 others have been wounded. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the war’s costs during a contentious exchange with lawmakers, arguing that the expenditure is necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He posed a direct question to the committee about the value of ensuring Iran does not develop such capabilities.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has warned that Iran must “get smart soon” to avoid further conflict, expressing frustration over stalled negotiations aimed at reaching a non-nuclear deal. The White House has yet to provide a clear timeline for additional funding or a definitive path toward peace, leaving the future of the war—and its costs—uncertain.
