Teen Crushed by Heavy Machinery at Construction Site; Family Files Lawsuit Over Fatal Accident

Lucas Gray, an 18-year-old construction worker from Oregon City, Oregon, was tragically killed when a 30,500-pound John Deere wheel loader crushed him while he was clearing debris from a hole on the job site. The incident occurred just one week before his final day at ICON Construction and Development, where he had been working during the summer break before starting college. Gray’s mother arrived at the scene to find her son covered in a yellow tarp, with blood staining the pavement around him. He was pronounced dead at the site.

The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigated the incident and cited ICON Construction for failing to protect workers from moving heavy machinery on-site. OSHA identified “serious” safety violations, including the absence of spotters, barricades, or traffic cones, which could have prevented the fatal accident. The company was fined $31,632 for these violations. Gray’s family has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Serres Farms Development, LLC and TR Oregon Holdings, Inc., alleging negligence in managing the chaotic construction site.

The lawsuit reveals internal communication from the wheel loader operator who fatally struck Gray, warning of “tensions” and lack of coordination at the site. The operator described the environment as unorganized and unproductive, with no clear direction among workers. Additionally, OSHA found that the site’s superintendent was frequently absent, leaving employees in an unsafe work environment. Attorneys for Gray’s family argue that sending a young worker into such conditions without proper safeguards constitutes “construction level 101 violations.” They are seeking $35 million in damages and have requested a jury trial.

ICON Construction has declined to comment on the lawsuit due to ongoing litigation but issued a statement expressing deep condolences for Gray’s death. The company emphasized its commitment to safety and cooperation with authorities during the investigation.
