Challenging the Nuclear Narrative: Linda Pentz Gunter Exposes Industry Myths
Linda Pentz Gunter, founder of Beyond Nuclear, has released a new book titled *No To Nuclear. Why Nuclear Power Destroys Lives, Derails Climate Progress And Provokes War* (Pluto Press, April 2026), which argues against the notion that nuclear power is a viable solution to the climate crisis. The book, described as a comprehensive critique of the nuclear industry, aims to dispel myths perpetuated by the sector and its allies, particularly those within the environmental movement.
Pentz Gunter highlights the disproportionate harm caused to Indigenous communities, people of color, and vulnerable populations, from uranium mining to nuclear testing. She also examines the blurred line between civil and military nuclear programs, using Iran as a case study. Despite claims by some that nuclear power is essential for combating climate change, Pentz Gunter argues that the industry relies on subsidies, colludes with governments, and shifts liability onto taxpayers through laws like the Price Anderson Act.
The book critiques the push for small modular reactors, which are more expensive, dangerous, and produce greater volumes of waste than existing reactors. Pentz Gunter points to examples such as Bill Gates’ TerraPower project, which received $2 billion in subsidies for a reactor that may never materialize. She questions why the industry demands federal protection under the Price Anderson Act while claiming its reactors are “meltdown-proof” and safe.
Pentz Gunter also exposes how self-described environmentalists like George Monbiot and Mark Lynas have propagated nuclear industry propaganda, despite evidence of harm from disasters like Fukushima and Chernobyl. Her work underscores the broader implications of nuclear power’s role in exacerbating inequality and undermining efforts to address climate change.
