Two U.S. Service Members Missing During Joint Military Exercise in Morocco
U.S. service members participating in the African Lion joint military exercise have gone missing near Tan Tan, Morocco, according to reports from U.S. Africa Command and the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces. The incident occurred on Sunday during training activities near Cap Draa, a key location for the exercises. Authorities have not yet confirmed the circumstances surrounding their disappearance but have launched extensive search-and-rescue operations involving ground, air, and maritime assets.
The joint effort includes U.S., Moroccan, and other partner forces working together to locate the missing individuals. The Moroccan army reported that the service members were last seen near a cliff, adding urgency to the ongoing search. While no details about their disappearance have been publicly shared yet, officials emphasized the seriousness of the situation and the commitment to finding the missing personnel.
The African Lion exercise is the largest annual military drill in Africa, designed to enhance cooperation between U.S., NATO, and African partner nations. This year’s edition ran from April 27 to May 8 across Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia, with the majority of activities taking place in Morocco. Over 5,000 personnel from more than 40 countries participated, including approximately 3,000 U.S. military members. The exercises focus on improving interoperability and readiness for potential security challenges in the region.
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols during such large-scale operations. While investigations are ongoing, the search effort remains a top priority for all involved parties.
