Israel Expands Air Force Capabilities With New F-35 and F-15 Purchases
The Israeli government has approved the acquisition of two new squadrons of advanced warplanes, marking a significant expansion of its air force capabilities. The move includes the purchase of a fourth squadron of F-35I fighters from Lockheed Martin and a second squadron of F-15IA aircraft from Boeing. This decision was made by the ministerial committee for acquisitions, according to a statement released by the Israeli Defense Ministry.
The transactions are estimated to cost tens of billions of shekels and include not only the acquisition of the aircraft but also comprehensive support, spare parts, and logistics. These purchases represent the first step in Israel’s long-term force-building plan, which aims to modernize its air defenses over the next decade with a total budget of 350 billion shekels ($118 billion). While the exact number of aircraft was not disclosed, this expansion will significantly bolster Israel’s aerial combat capabilities.
The F-35I, a stealth fighter capable of penetrating enemy airspace and engaging advanced anti-aircraft systems, is a cornerstone of Israel’s modernization efforts. The fourth squadron will bring Israel’s total F-35I fleet to approximately 100 aircraft, doubling its current count. These planes are uniquely equipped with Israeli-made electronic warfare, communication, and control systems integrated into their software. Similarly, the F-15IA, a variant of Boeing’s F-15EX, is designed for heavy combat and long-range missions, featuring advanced radar, a digital fly-by-wire system, and a payload capacity of up to 29,500 pounds. The second squadron will increase Israel’s F-15IA fleet to 50 aircraft.
The decision to expand its air force comes amid heightened tensions with Iran and following operational insights from “Operation Lion Roar.” These purchases aim to ensure the Israeli Air Force maintains technological and strategic superiority in the region for decades to come. The Defense Ministry emphasized the need for a “technological leap,” including advancements in autonomous flight capabilities and next-generation defense systems, to secure both offensive and defensive military advantages, as well as space-based operations.
Following the approval, the director-general of the Defense Ministry has instructed the Israeli procurement delegation in the United States to proceed with signing these deals. This move underscores Israel’s commitment to modernizing its military infrastructure and maintaining a robust deterrent capability in the face of evolving regional threats.
