Pentagon Aims to Transform Audits with AI by FY28
The Pentagon is turning to advanced AI and automation to meet a critical deadline for achieving a clean financial audit by fiscal year 2028. Senior officials, including Tom Harker, the Department of Defense's deputy CFO, emphasized that this initiative is crucial due to Congress's mandate, which threatens significant funding cuts if the Pentagon fails to pass the audit.
Harker highlighted the shift from traditional auditing methods to a more efficient approach using AI. The Pentagon plans to consolidate data from various financial systems into Advana, an advanced analytics platform, enabling real-time insights and reducing the time required for audits. This move is part of a broader strategy to address long-standing issues with financial reporting, which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has described as a "disaster."
Despite progress, challenges remain. The Pentagon faces a shortage of skilled personnel needed to implement AI-driven solutions effectively. Harker stressed the importance of recruiting experts in coding and system configuration to fully leverage these technologies. Success in this endeavor will not only secure the required audit but also enhance decision-making capabilities across the department.
