Libyan Factions Join Forces in Turkish Military Drills Signaling Diplomatic Thaw
Military personnel from Libya’s rival eastern and western governments are participating in the Efes-2026 multinational exercise in Turkey, marking a significant step toward institutional reconciliation. The training, coordinated by the Aegean Army Command, involves hundreds of soldiers from both the Government of National Unity and the Tobruk-based Libyan National Army. This collaboration follows a similar joint effort during the recent Flintlock-2026 exercises, where forces from both sides operated together under the oversight of U.S. Africa Command.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense views this integration as a crucial milestone for the "One Army, One Libya" initiative, which seeks to foster stability and cohesion within the fractured nation. By training side-by-side in both computer-assisted simulations and live maneuvers, these opposing factions are moving toward a unified military structure. This rapprochement is supported by the 3+3 Libyan Joint Military Committee, which aims to bridge the long-standing divide between the country’s competing power centers. As these factions continue to engage in international exercises, the prospect of a single, unified Libyan security force appears increasingly attainable.
