Serial Killer Sentenced for 34-Year-Old Cold Case

Joseph Foster, a convicted serial killer already serving multiple life sentences, has been handed an additional 75 years to life in state prison for the 1992 murder of Alwin Schoefer, an 85-year-old man whose death went unsolved for decades. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced the sentencing on April 30, marking a significant breakthrough in a case that had gone cold for 34 years.

On August 6, 1992, police responded to a burning home in Placer County, California, which had been padlocked shut. Inside, they discovered Schoefer’s body, which showed signs of both stabbing and gunshot wounds. Investigators determined the fire was set deliberately after his death. At the time, authorities suspected robbery as a potential motive, given that Schoefer was known to keep large sums of cash at home rather than in a bank.

Despite extensive efforts, the case remained unsolved until advances in DNA technology linked Foster to the crime. He pleaded guilty to murder on March 30, 2023, following his conviction for other homicides from 1980 and 1991. Those earlier cases were solved via DNA in 2017, according to local news reports. Foster is already serving multiple life sentences for the deaths of a man and woman in 1991 and the shooting death of another man in 1980, for which he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo emphasized the department’s commitment to solving cold cases, stating that such developments only strengthen their resolve to pursue justice. The case highlights the enduring impact of DNA technology in re-solving long-unsolved crimes and underscores the importance of persistence in criminal investigations.
