Escalating Conflict Traps Thousands of Maritime Workers in Strait of Hormuz Blockade

More than 20,000 seafarers from nations across the Global South remain stranded at sea as rival naval blockades between the United States and Iran paralyze the Strait of Hormuz. Approximately 1,500 commercial vessels, including oil tankers and cargo ships, are currently immobilized in the region, leaving their crews effectively trapped without the necessary visas to disembark in nearby Gulf ports. These workers, who primarily hail from developing countries, have now gone several weeks without pay while facing critical shortages of food, clean water, and essential supplies.

International labor organizations warn that the humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating as the conflict continues to disrupt global shipping lanes. Representatives from the International Transport Workers’ Federation and the Forward Seamen’s Union of India highlight that these crews are merchant sailors, not combatants, and are entirely unprepared for the dangers of an active war zone. Beyond the immediate physical risks, the isolation and inability to communicate with their families are causing severe psychological distress among the stranded personnel. As the geopolitical standoff persists, these maritime workers remain in a state of extreme vulnerability with no clear path toward evacuation or relief.
