Georgia Inmate Faces Murder Prosecution Following Decade-Long Delayed Death of Shooting Victim
Marcus Tobias Jackson, an Augusta man currently serving time for a 2016 shooting, now faces new murder charges after his victim succumbed to long-term complications from the incident. Warren Gordon, who was left paralyzed by the initial attack, passed away this past March. An autopsy conducted after Gordon's death determined that the cause was infected ulcers, which medical examiners linked directly to the physical trauma and chronic health issues resulting from the gunshot wounds sustained nearly ten years ago.
Jackson was originally sentenced to twelve years in prison for the assault, a term that had been extended in 2023 following a disciplinary infraction involving contraband within the correctional facility. With his original release date approaching, the new murder warrant significantly complicates his legal status. Prosecutors are now moving to hold him accountable for the ultimate outcome of the 2016 violence. This development highlights the complex legal intersection between long-term medical decline and criminal culpability, as authorities seek to extend Jackson’s incarceration to reflect the fatal conclusion of his original victim's struggle.
