Pentagon Reverses Course on E-7 Wedgetail Program Following Congressional Pressure
The Department of Defense is moving to amend its Fiscal Year 2027 budget request to include new funding for the E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft. This pivot marks a significant shift for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who previously advocated for the program's cancellation in favor of alternative intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets. The reversal comes after intense scrutiny from lawmakers, including House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, who challenged the Pentagon’s initial decision to exclude the platform from future spending plans.
The urgency to modernize the U.S. Air Force’s airborne command and control capabilities has been amplified by the recent destruction of an E-3 Sentry aircraft during an Iranian strike at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. With the existing E-3 fleet facing mounting maintenance challenges and operational strain, the E-7 is increasingly viewed as a critical replacement. Hegseth acknowledged that the department has moved away from a restrictive "divest-to-invest" strategy, admitting that previous attempts to cut legacy platforms created dangerous capability gaps. The Pentagon has now submitted a budget amendment to the Office of Management and Budget to secure the necessary resources for the E-7, signaling a renewed commitment to fielding the advanced radar jet.
