IRGC Navy Redefines Strait of Hormuz Operational Zone, Sparking Global Concern
---
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has significantly expanded its operational definition of the Strait of Hormuz, a move that has raised tensions in the region and global economic concerns. According to Mohammad Akbarzadeh, Political Deputy of the IRGC Navy, the newly defined zone now stretches from Jask in the east to Siri Island in the west, forming a "complete crescent" over 200 to 300 miles wide—a tenfold increase from its previous scope. This redefinition marks a strategic shift, with Akbarzadeh stating that the Strait is no longer viewed as a limited area around islands like Hormuz and Hengam but as a vast strategic zone of military significance.
The expansion comes amid ongoing hostilities between Iran and U.S.-led forces, including Operation Epic Fury, which has severely impacted Iran's naval capabilities. Despite significant losses, the IRGC continues to attack ships in the region using drones, cruise missiles, and small boats, while also reportedly laying mines in the Strait even after a ceasefire was declared earlier this month. The White House dismissed the announcement as an attempt by Iran to assert control over the region, with Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stating that the Iranian regime is "struggling to sustain its current reality" under U.S.-led economic and military pressure.
The redefinition of the Strait's operational zone has far-reaching implications for global trade, as the waterway remains a critical route for oil shipments. While CENTCOM has not responded to the claims, recent exchanges between U.S. forces and Iranian-aligned groups in the region highlight the volatile situation. The ongoing conflict underscores the potential for further escalation, particularly with President Trump considering new military actions against Tehran amid stalled peace negotiations.
This development reflects Iran's continued efforts to assert dominance in the Strait of Hormuz, a move that could complicate international shipping routes and deepen tensions in the Middle East.
