U.S. Army Set to Rotate Troops Along Southern Border This Summer

The U.S. Army has announced plans to rotate troops along the U.S.-Mexico border this summer, with the 1st Armored Division taking command of the Joint Task Force – Southern Border mission. The Pentagon revealed the deployment details on Tuesday, outlining a series of rotations involving multiple divisions. The 1st Mobile Brigade from the 101st Airborne Division will replace the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Armored Division, while the Combat Aviation Brigade of the 1st Armored Division will assume duties from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division. Additionally, the sustainment brigade of the 1st Armored Division will take over from the 10th Mountain Division’s sustainment brigade.

Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commander of the 1st Armored Division, expressed pride in assuming this mission. He highlighted that for many soldiers, defending U.S. borders holds a special significance as it ties directly to their personal connection to borderland communities. This marks a shift in the military’s role under President Donald Trump, which has seen an increased presence at the border, tripling troop numbers in his second term. Previously, border control was primarily managed by civilian law enforcement.

The command center for this mission is Fort Huachuca, Arizona, from where soldiers will deploy to various locations along the southern border. Their tasks include carrying out directed missions and protecting U.S. territorial integrity. This deployment underscores a broader strategy to enhance security measures at the border, reflecting ongoing national security concerns.
