Air Force Rescue Units Honored with Rare Presidential Citation for Afghanistan Evacuation
The 55th and 48th Air Force rescue squadrons have been awarded the prestigious Presidential Unit Citation for their critical roles in the U.S. military’s evacuation of American citizens and Afghans during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. This award, the highest collective honor for U.S. military units, recognizes exceptional valor and achievements demonstrated by these rescue teams.
The citation follows a long tradition of honoring units that have displayed extraordinary heroism under dire circumstances. Previous recipients include the 2nd Ranger Battalion for its D-Day assault on Pointe du Hoc during World War II and SEAL Team Six for the 2011 mission that killed Osama Bin Laden. The award was presented to the 55th and 48th squadrons on behalf of the deactivated 66th and 58th Rescue Squadrons, which played pivotal roles in the evacuation efforts.
The 66th Rescue Squadron operated HH-60 rescue helicopters, while the 58th trained Air Force pararescuemen (PJs) at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. These units worked closely together during the evacuation, showcasing their expertise and dedication under immense pressure. Col. Jose Cabrera, commander of the 355th Wing, highlighted the significance of this recognition, stating that it will “go down in Air Force history as one of the greatest accomplishments of the Air Force rescue community.”
The citation underscores the bravery and professionalism of these rescue units, whose efforts ensured the safe evacuation of thousands during a historic and challenging period. Their actions not only saved lives but also demonstrated the resilience and commitment of the U.S. military in the face of adversity.
