USS Gerald R. Ford Returns Home After Record-Breaking 11-Month Deployment
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, is set to return to its homeport of Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday after completing a historic 320-day deployment—a record-breaking achievement for post-Vietnam-era carriers. The ship’s extended tour at sea, which surpassed the previous record held by the USS Abraham Lincoln in 2020, concluded with its recent operations in the Middle East and Caribbean Seas.
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle highlighted the significance of the deployment during a House Armed Services Committee hearing, expressing pride in the ship’s crew and their contributions to national security. The Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group supported U.S. Central Command missions against Iran under Operation Epic Fury and contributed to regional stability through Operations Southern Spear and Absolute Resolve in the Caribbean.
Despite its achievements, the deployment was not without challenges. In March, a fire broke out in the ship’s main laundry room, injuring two sailors and displacing hundreds from their berths. The incident forced the carrier to temporarily dock in Greece and Croatia for repairs. Additionally, the vessel faced ongoing issues with its plumbing systems, which have been problematic since 2023.
The USS Gerald R. Ford’s return marks a milestone for the U.S. Navy, showcasing both the capabilities of modern carriers and the resilience of their crews. As it arrives back in Norfolk, the ship and its crew will receive a well-deserved welcome, capping off an extraordinary mission at sea.
