U.S. Army Restructures Pacific Forces with Multi-Domain Command-Pacific Formation
The U.S. Army has announced the creation of the Multi-Domain Command-Pacific (MDC-PAC), a new two-star command that merges the 7th Infantry Division and the 1st Multi-Domain Task Force. This restructuring, revealed during the 2026 Land Forces of the Pacific Symposium and Exposition in Hawaii, aims to enhance readiness and adaptability for future conflicts in the Indo-Pacific region.
The new command will integrate traditional infantry forces with advanced multi-domain capabilities, including space, electronic warfare, cyber, and intelligence operations. Lt. Gen. Matthew McFarlane, commanding general of I Corps and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, emphasized that this reorganization reflects a shift toward agility and innovation. "We’re making formations to test and integrate equipment, and we’re adjusting," he said. The merger is set to begin in mid-June, with soldiers from the 1st MDTF transferring into the 7th Infantry Division.
The establishment of MDC-PAC aligns with broader Army efforts to modernize and respond to emerging threats from China and North Korea. By combining Stryker brigades, a combat aviation brigade, and multi-domain task forces, the command will operate across a larger joint operational area, enhancing its ability to project power in the Indo-Pacific. This restructuring also underscores the importance of collaboration with allies and partners, as highlighted by Brig. Gen. William Parker of the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command during the symposium.
The move follows the conclusion of Exercise Balikatan 2026, a bilateral drill between the U.S. and Philippine militaries that included multinational participation from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, France, and Canada. The exercise marked a significant step toward building a more cohesive defense network in the region. As the Army continues to evolve its operational framework, MDC-PAC represents a forward-looking approach to addressing modern security challenges.
