Air Force Special Ops Command Readies OA-1K Skyraider II for Rapid Deployability Testing and Enhanced Capabilities

The U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is set to showcase the rapid-deployment capabilities of its new OA-1K Skyraider II aircraft later this year. With 18 units already delivered, AFSOC aims to demonstrate how this versatile platform can quickly respond to various mission requirements. Lt. Col. Robert Wilson, head of the AFSOC Armed Overwatch Requirements Branch, provided updates during Special Operations Forces (SOF) Week in Tampa, Florida. The OA-1K is designed to complement legacy platforms like the U-28 and MC-12W, offering a modern solution for today's complex operational environments.

The OA-1K, derived from the Air Tractor AT-802 crop duster, represents a shift in AFSOC's strategy. Originally developed for counter-terrorism missions, it now supports a broader range of operations, including crisis response and competition against advanced adversaries. Wilson emphasized its role as a multi-role platform capable of close air support, intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strikes. This flexibility makes the OA-1K a key asset in modernizing AFSOC's capabilities.

AFSOC is also exploring enhancements to bolster the OA-1K's effectiveness. Plans include integrating laser-guided Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) rockets and Red Wolf mini cruise missiles to improve standoff strike capabilities. These upgrades aim to address survivability concerns amid heightened tensions with China, which remains a top threat. The aircraft's modular design allows for future adaptability, ensuring it can evolve alongside emerging threats and mission needs.
