Kennedy Removes Co-Chairs of Task Force Governing Insurance Coverage

The Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has dismissed the co-chairs of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a move that could introduce more political influence into decisions affecting health insurance coverage. The task force, which advises on preventive services covered by insurers without patient costs under the Affordable Care Act, had its leaders informed of their removal via letters dated May 11.

The dismissed chairs were John Wong, a Tufts University professor, and Esa Davis, a University of Maryland professor. Their terms were set to expire in March 2027 and 2028, respectively. The letters stated the decision was administrative and unrelated to performance, aiming to "preserve confidence" in the task force's work while inviting them to reapply for roles on the panel.

Kennedy's action follows a Supreme Court ruling affirming HHS' authority to replace task force members. With new applications due this Saturday, the future composition of the task force remains uncertain. Experts like AcademyHealth President Aaron Carroll express concerns about potential political influence impacting guidelines and insurance coverage decisions.
