Tragedy at Coney Island: Mother Sentenced for Drowning Her Three Children

Erin Merdy, a 34-year-old Brooklyn mother, has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for drowning her three children near the Coney Island boardwalk on September 12, 2022. The victims were identified as 7-year-old Zachary Merdy, 4-year-old Liliana Stephens Merdy, and 3-month-old Oliver Bondarev. Merdy pleaded guilty to all charges in March and was handed the sentence during a court proceeding on May 20.

The heartbreaking incident occurred shortly after midnight when Merdy took her children to the beach. She reportedly drowned them in the ocean before walking two miles toward the home of Bondarev’s father while making calls to relatives. Her relatives expressed concern after she told them the children were gone and that she was sorry. Bondarev’s father then dialed 911, leading authorities to discover the bodies at around 4:30 a.m. The children were pronounced dead at a local hospital.

During a psychiatric evaluation following the drownings, Merdy described experiencing a nightmare about her children being in the water, stating, “I couldn’t save him.” Investigators found that Merdy had been struggling with mental health issues, including postpartum depression after Bondarev’s birth in May 2022. She had previously checked herself into the hospital for these conditions. Additionally, Merdy was facing eviction at the time of the incident, owing more than $10,000 in back rent.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzales described the loss of the three innocent lives as “heartbreaking and unthinkable,” emphasizing that no sentence could fully address the grief endured by their families. The case highlights the profound impact of mental health struggles and the challenges faced by caregivers in crisis situations.
