California Man Sentenced to Life for Torture and Murder of Toddler

Ezequiel Ramirez has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 35 years, for the brutal murder of his 23-month-old son, Joziah Ramirez. The sentencing follows a guilty plea for first-degree murder with the special circumstance of torture. In addition to the murder charge, Ramirez pleaded guilty to seven felony counts related to pimping, pandering, and soliciting prostitution.

The tragedy occurred in June 2020 at a motel in Visalia, California, where Ramirez was operating a criminal enterprise. While the child's mother was away, Ramirez severely assaulted the toddler, inflicting blunt force trauma to the head, skull fractures, and burns. After the attack, Ramirez attempted to cover his tracks by deleting phone data and fleeing the scene, initially claiming to a friend that he had been in a car accident. Despite the severity of the injuries, Ramirez later told investigators he did not hurt the child "that bad."

The case reveals a long history of abuse and criminal activity. Ramirez had previously been on parole for robbery and statutory rape and had been pimping the child's mother. The toddler's mother has also faced legal consequences for failing to protect her son and is scheduled for sentencing on felony child endangerment charges in June 2026.
