Christian Menefee Ousts Longtime Representative Al Green in Houston Democratic Runoff

Christian Menefee secures a decisive victory over Al Green in the Democratic runoff election for Houston's newly redrawn 18th Congressional District. With roughly 61 percent of the ballots counted, Menefee holds a commanding lead with 68.6 percent of the vote, compared to 31.4 percent for Green. This result effectively ends Green's twenty-year tenure in the United States Congress.

The political shift follows a redistricting process by Texas lawmakers that altered Green's former 9th District to favor Republican candidates, prompting his move to the 18th. Menefee enters this race having already won a special election earlier this year to fill the vacancy created by the passing of former Representative Sylvester Turner. Because the special election only covered the current term, Menefee was required to run again to secure the seat for the term beginning in 2027.

The campaign was marked by sharp tensions following the March primary. Green criticized Menefee for accepting campaign funds from a cryptocurrency super PAC, a move Green characterized as a deal with the devil. Menefee dismissed these accusations as desperate attempts by a long-term incumbent who had failed to secure a majority in the initial primary ballot.

Following the announcement, Menefee attributed the victory to the voters and criticized the Republican-led redistricting efforts. He now prepares for the general election in November, where he will face Republican nominee Ronald Whitfield, a newcomer to the political arena.
