Parents Sentenced for Neglect Leading to Death of 11-Year-Old Son with Rare Illness

In April 2024, John L. Towne and Ahhra K. Pugh were convicted by a jury in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, for the death of their 11-year-old son, Hunter Towne, who had been suffering from Hirschsprung's disease, a rare congenital condition affecting the colon. This week, Judge Kevin K. Kelley sentenced both parents to 15 years in prison following the boy’s death at an Extended Stay America Premier Suites hotel room in Independence, Ohio.

The family was living in the hotel with six children and two pets when Hunter died on January 10, 2024. The room was described by local police as being in "deplorable conditions," and medical examiners concluded that his death resulted from caregiver neglect. During the sentencing hearing, Pugh expressed deep remorse for her actions, acknowledging that she should have sought proper medical care for Hunter but failed to do so.

Pugh’s lawyer emphasized during the proceedings that this was a tragic event affecting not only Hunter but also his siblings and parents. The mother tearfully apologized in court, stating, "I didn't just lose Hunter. Essentially, I lost all my kids." Her statement highlighted the profound impact of her actions on the entire family structure.

The case underscores the severe consequences faced by caregivers who neglect to provide essential medical care for children with chronic illnesses, particularly those requiring specialized treatment and monitoring.
