Florida Man Faces Manslaughter Trial for Fatal Boat Crash Involving Teen

Florida man George Pino, 55, is currently undergoing trial in Miami after being charged with manslaughter and vessel homicide following a tragic boating incident that occurred on September 4, 2022. The case revolves around an outing Pino organized to celebrate his daughter's birthday at a sand bar in Biscayne Bay, where he allegedly provided alcohol to underage teenagers aboard the boat.

According to prosecutors, after consuming alcohol during the party, Pino accelerated through a narrow channel known as the "Cutter Bank" while returning home. Witnesses and evidence suggest that Pino was driving on the wrong side of the channel at speeds exceeding 43 miles per hour before colliding with a brightly painted green marker. This collision resulted in several teens being thrown into the water, one of whom, 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez, died from drowning.

The incident has also led to a separate lawsuit filed by the family of another passenger, Katerina Puig, who claims Pino's negligence caused significant injuries resulting in permanent disability. As jury selection for the trial continues, Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez is carefully managing potential biases among jurors who may have overheard details about the case.

The prosecution has presented GPS data indicating that Pino was on a collision course with the marker for several seconds before impact, contradicting his claim of evasive action due to another boat. Meanwhile, the defense argues that there were no speed limits in the channel and emphasizes Pino's long history of safely navigating the area. The emotional testimony from both sides highlights the complex nature of the case, as it involves not only legal but also deeply personal consequences for all involved.
