U.S. Sends Troops to Kenya for Ebola Quarantine Facility Amid Protests

The United States has deployed military personnel to an air base in Nanyuki, Kenya, approximately 120 miles from Nairobi, to assist with the establishment of a quarantine facility aimed at housing Americans exposed to Ebola. The deployment comes as tensions rise over the planned facility, which has sparked significant protests in Kenya, resulting in fatalities due to police intervention. While the exact number and units of troops involved remain undisclosed, U.S. Africa Command confirmed that the forward coordinating element includes medical planners alongside engineers, communications experts, and security personnel tasked with logistical support.

The quarantine facility is a collaborative effort led by the State Department, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It is designed to screen Americans who have been exposed to Ebola before they can return to the United States. The decision to establish this site in Kenya follows an Ebola outbreak declared on May 15th, with confirmed cases reported in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As of now, over 689 cases have been documented in the DRC, while more than a dozen cases are recorded in Uganda.

The deployment underscores the ongoing global health challenges posed by infectious diseases like Ebola and highlights the complex diplomatic and logistical considerations involved when implementing international health measures. The protests against the quarantine facility reflect local concerns about its impact on Kenyan communities and public safety, adding another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation.
