
Pentagon Allocates $465 Million for Laser Weapon to Combat Iranian Drones
The U.S. Army has awarded a contract worth $464.8 million to AeroVironment, Inc., for the procurement of LOCUST X3 lasers as part of its Enduring-High Energy Laser program. This advanced laser weapon system is specifically designed to counter mid-sized drones, often referred to as "Group 3 unmanned aerial systems," which have been a persistent threat in conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine.
John Garrity, vice president of directed energy systems at AeroVironment, emphasized the importance of this technology during an Aug. 7 press conference. He noted that Group 3 drones, such as Iran’s Shahed-136 one-way attack drone, have been a significant threat to U.S. troops and allied forces in the Middle East for over five months.
The LOCUST X3 laser operates at 30 kilowatts of power and is capable of destroying these drones within seconds from considerable distances. This capability makes it particularly effective against swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles, which have become a favored tactic among adversaries due to their low cost and high impact potential.
Garrity highlighted the unique advantages offered by laser technology over conventional countermeasures. "When you talk about a LOCUST laser weapon system," he explained, "you’re able to put effects on target at wide ranges at the speed of light." This rapid engagement time allows for efficient targeting and destruction of multiple threats simultaneously.
The deployment of this advanced laser system underscores the evolving nature of modern warfare, where unmanned aerial systems pose significant challenges to traditional defense mechanisms. As such drones continue to proliferate in conflict zones, the U.S. military's investment in high-energy laser technology represents a strategic move to maintain superiority on the battlefield and protect its forces from emerging threats.
