Miami Millionaire's Deadly Boat Crash Trial Hears Testimonies from Survivors
Miami millionaire real estate developer George Pino, 55, is currently standing trial for manslaughter and vessel homicide following a deadly boat crash that occurred in Biscayne Bay during Labor Day weekend in 2022. The incident resulted in the death of 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez, who was one of Pino's daughter’s friends. On September 4, 2022, Pino and his wife took a group of their daughter’s friends out for a celebratory boat ride to mark her 18th birthday at a sandbar in the bay. Prosecutors allege that both parents allowed underage girls on board to consume alcohol before the tragic event.
During the trial proceedings, several witnesses have testified about the chaotic moments leading up to and following the crash. The boat struck a channel marker while navigating through Cutter Bank channel, causing it to capsize and eject some of its passengers into the water. Despite attempts by Pino's defense team to argue that the visibility of the marker may have been compromised due to high tide and current conditions, Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez declined to dismiss charges against him.
Boating instructor Paul Alber was called back to testify on behalf of the defense, emphasizing that while there were no posted speed limits in the channel where the crash occurred, such regulations are not typically numerical as seen on land. However, this did little to sway the prosecution's stance that Pino operated the vessel recklessly and under the influence.
Survivors like Claudia Portocarrero and Natalia Reed have provided conflicting testimonies regarding Pino’s state of mind and behavior during the trip. While they denied observing signs of intoxication or unsafe operation from Pino, both agreed on the suddenness and unexpected nature of the crash itself. Their accounts suggest a perfect day that rapidly deteriorated into chaos and tragedy for those involved.
