Air Force Announces Highest Technical Sergeant Promotion Rate Since 2021
The U.S. Air Force has announced that 26.59% of eligible staff sergeants will be promoted to technical sergeant for the 2026 promotion cycle, marking the highest rate since 2021 and a significant increase from the recent lows in 2022 and 2023. This year's selection process identified 6,668 mid-career noncommissioned officers (NCOs) for advancement, with official notifications to be sent out on June 25. The promotion rate reflects a gradual recovery from a period of reduced promotions initiated in the early 2020s as part of efforts to extend service time at lower ranks and enhance readiness.
The Air Force's decision to slow down promotions was aimed at ensuring that staff sergeants had more tenure before advancing, which led to a sharp decline in promotion rates. In contrast, the rate for technical sergeant promotions reached nearly one-third of eligible candidates in 2019, but dropped significantly over the next few years as part of this strategic adjustment. The latest figures show an upward trend, with the 2025 rate being 25.62%, just slightly below Monday's announcement.
Despite the higher promotion rate, the actual number of promotions is fewer compared to previous years. In 2019 and earlier, annual promotions averaged over 8,000, whereas this year’s figure stands at 6,668. Technical sergeant is an important mid-career rank in the Air Force's NCO hierarchy, just below master sergeant, which requires a selection rate of 20.76% for eligible technical sergeants moving up to senior noncommissioned officer status. This progression helps maintain a balanced and experienced workforce within the service's leadership structure.
