Saab Secures $303 Million Contract to Advance Sweden’s Future Fighter Jet Program

Saab has been awarded a significant contract by Sweden's Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) for approximately SEK 2.9 billion ($303 million), extending the company's role in developing the nation's next-generation fighter jet system. The agreement, announced on Wednesday, covers a period from 2026 to 2028, with potential extensions into 2029 and 2030. This marks Saab’s third major contract related to Sweden’s Koncept för Framtida Stridsflyg (KFS) program since its inception in 2024.

The new contract aims to further conceptual work on both manned and unmanned platforms, including flying demonstrators and ground-based systems. It also involves advanced studies and the development of future system concepts that will enhance Sweden's capabilities in areas such as autonomous operations, stealth technology, propulsion systems, and digital engineering. Saab’s Aeronautics business area head, Lars Tossman, emphasized the importance of FMV’s continued support for advancing critical technologies essential to future air combat systems.

The KFS program represents a strategic shift from Sweden's previous collaboration with the UK-led Team Tempest initiative, which was terminated in 2023. Instead, Sweden opted for an independent domestic development path aimed at securing its air power capabilities beyond 2040. The initial phase of the KFS contract, signed in March 2024, included a SEK 2.6 billion extension covering work through 2027, with plans for a flying demonstrator and technology development concluding by mid-2026.

Saab’s F-series branding encompasses a range of fighter jet concepts designed to cater to various operational requirements. These include crewed fighters alongside subsonic and supersonic unmanned platforms across different weight classes and configurations. As the sole manufacturer of fighter jets in Sweden, Saab's Gripen series has long been integral to the Swedish air force’s operations.
